With deep sadness, we announce that John died peacefully at Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines, ON, with his sisters at his bedside. Born in Sydney, NS, he was the son of Rosella (Murphy) and Ferruccio (Fred Sr.) Polegato. He is survived by his two sisters in St. Catharines, ON, Delores, who was his devoted caregiver, and Virginia, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Geno (Mary Ellen), Wallace (Anne), Fred Jr. (Jean), Bruno (Marina), and brother-in-law, William Munroe.
John, a farmer by trade, loved the fresh air of the outdoors. Depending on the time of year, he would be making hay, clearing the woods, or picking rocks. He missed farming when he moved to Ontario. He had fond memories of his little Massey-Ferguson tractor which “could do anything,” including get out of a rut easily.
Hunting and fishing (especially ice fishing and trout fishing) were two of his pastimes. He also liked to be out on his skidoo and ATV and appreciated their comfortable seats. More recently his interest was in the technology of computers and smartphones.
John loved live wrestling. He was a big fan of Leo Burke and was always willing to share the story of his life and career. Detective shows and Heartland were his television picks. John, himself, was a great storyteller; he liked to tell funny stories and stories with happy endings.
Cremation has taken place at Butler Funeral Home in St. Catharines. Visitation on July 9, 2024, 2:00-4:00, at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, NS. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 10th at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, NS, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. There will be a get-together at the luncheon downstairs at the church immediately following Mass. Interment with the family will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Grand Lake Road, Sydney. NS.
Thank you to healthcare professionals for their expertise and care; to neighbours, especially Debbie Starrs for her wonderful help; and to family and friends who sent prayers and best wishes to John.
