It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Connors, who died peacefully, in the early morning hours of Dec. 6, 2014, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Gerald and Rose (Shebib) Connors.
A man of great faith, he was a longstanding member of Our Lady of Fatima parish, Sydney River.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his beloved wife, Lorna.
Born May 7, 1941, and raised in Sydney, Gerald attended Sydney Academy. As a young man, he worked for the Canadian Coast Guard on an ice breaker, which took him many places, most notably to the Arctic Circle. It was around this time he met Lorna Mancini, the love of his life. They were married for 49 years before her sudden passing in November of last year.
Gerald worked for many years at the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission, and retired from there as a manager. He was committed to serving his community, which he did through his involvement with the Kinsmen, as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and as a director of Cairdeil Place. He spent a happy and fulfilling retirement, sharing good times and laughter with his family and large circle of friends.
He will be sadly missed by his many great friends at the Seaview Golf Club and Sydney Curling Club, by members of the skating community in Sydney, by his wonderful fishing and hunting buddies, and by his dear neighbourhood friends. To know Gerry was to love him.
But he will be most deeply missed by his devoted family. He was a kind and loving father to Kelly (Erin), Westmount, Tara Connors-Torres, Coxheath, and Cory (Wynter), Timberlea; and a gentle and doting grandfather to his adored grandchildren, Aidan, Clare, Andreas, Ella and Brynn. Gerald will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Pamela Lesnick and Lorraine (Joe) MacKinnon; brothers, Wendell (Tina) and George (Marie), who were also his best friends; his sisters-in-law, Bernice King and Margaret Connors; and many nieces and nephews.
The entire Connors family will fondly remember the many happy times spent laughing and joking with 'Uncle Gerald'.
Visitation for Gerald will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River, with Fr. D. Devereaux officiating. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cairdeil Place, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
