Florence MacNeil, R.N., passed away suddenly on July 25, 2020, surrounded by her family. Born in Glace Bay on January 6, 1942, she was the daughter of Kit and Veronica Nightingale. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1962 and nursed at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay. She married Donald “Red Dan” MacNeil of Big Pond in 1963. In the early 1970’s, they returned to Big Pond, where they met & spent many happy years raising their family. Florence shared her passion for nursing with her community. She and Donald willingly responded to calls any time of day or night. They took great pride in serving their community. Lovingly known as “Ma” to everyone, her door was always open to her children’s friends and they became a lasting part of our family. Ma loved to cook and bake for friends and family. You either left her home with your hands full or she sent it to you. Ma was adored by everyone, but most especially her grandchildren. She had a special relationship with each and every one of them, and loved spending time with them, sharing her life stories, taking them on outings, whether a walk to the store, picking berries or a drive up River Denys Mountain. She is survived by children, Anne (Bill Wright), Sydney, Donna (Darryl) Frizzell, Halifax, Jeanie (Darren) Andrews, Sydney, Janet (Shaun) MacDonald, Dutch Brook, Roddie (Denise), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jillian, Danielle, Brittany, Madison, Josh, Daniel, Max, Catherine, Francis, Cody, Connor and Hunter, and one great-grandchild, Mya; siblings, Claire Chipman, Angus, Jimmy (Shelley), Daniel (Carol), Johnny (Sherry), Karl (Pat), Raymond, Patricia (Jim) Cumminger, Topper (Corrine); sisters-in-law, Florence Forgeron, Merrilyn Jones and Becky Nightingale as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Donald “Red Dan” MacNeil, brothers Billy, Beaver and Bobby and sister-in-law Catherine MacKay as well as Ralph Morey. A private family gathering will take place. Interment of her cremated remains in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Big Pond will take place at a later date.
