I am still in disbelief. Peggy was always supportive of me as she was of so many authors. She was kind and helpful and she will be missed.

Sorry to read about Peggy’s death. I had the pleasure of working with her when she was in politics.  As always a kind loving considerate lady whom I will always remember.

I knew Peggy since high school and years later when she opened her shop on Charlotte street I saw her often as I worked a couple of shops down and of course we ran into each other a lot at the Steel she was the sweetest person always smiling and laughing, I was so shocked to hear of her death, she will be surely missed. It's hard to believe Peggy has passed. I was a supplier to her beautiful shop. We soon became friends. She was passionate, funny and had such a gentle nature. Condolences to her family.

Peggy MacAdam’s death is a blow to so many of us—a loss of light, and warmth. To Downtown Sydney. To Cape Breton’s cultural world. And to friendships of all shapes, sizes, and qualities. And I have lost a fellow book lover, reader, purveyor of books, and single woman. Powerful and imperfect, friendly and focussed, Peggy set an example for how to live a full life. Any of us who interacted with her feel lucky to carry the memories.

My deepest sympathy to Nora and her family.   I will miss Peggy dearly.  I loved her quick wit, her direct manner and enthusiasm for, well, everything.   Where's Cary Grant when you need him Peggy?

Sorry to hear the sad news of my friend Peggy passing it is a loss to her family friends and her community who she loved so much a gave so much, her passing will be a hard but she would want us to enjoy our lives. Peggy RIP 🙏✝️

I was shocked to learn of Peggy’s death. I was a supplier to Peggy’s store ever since she opened and I considered her to be more of a friend than a customer and she was a very good customer.   She was a very kind and generous person and will be missed by all who knew her.  My condolences to you all.

I was in the store picking up a Christmas gift for our son not that long ago.........with  a very good friend of mine.
I was surprised  she was selling out after moving to such a great new location.

I was at the “decluttering”sale. I was telling Peggy how many years ago,when I bought the Nova Scotia Songbook for my son,Andrew,she said leave it here for a day or two at the shop and I will have Allister autograph it to him!These little touches that made it such a special shop.R.I.P. dear lady!

I am still in shock learning that Peggy had passed. She was one of a kind for sure and will be missed by everyone who knew her. When a new CD came out she would make sure that a copy was made available for Celtic Serenade. Peggy was a great, perhaps the greatest supporter of everything Cape Breton, music to books to selling tickets for anyone who asked. Generous to everyone who came asking for a donation. I will miss our suppers at the Steel City, lobster at my home and restaurants with friends. We talked about getting together over Christmas for a meal and a cold beer. Peggy was special and one of a kind. Her shoes will never be filled but will be remembered for many years to come. RIP my friend until we meet again. Say hello to Ralph, Steve, McNally (my brother in law) and Agnes .

So sorry to hear of Peggy's passing.  She was such a lovely person and would love our little chats when we would meet on Charlotte Street. I always looked forward to see her variety of items in and outside her store that were so tastefully displayed. My deepest sympathy to her family and sending love and hugs at this difficult time. She will be dearly missed.

Peggy was loved by so many—far more than she probably realized. She had a way of leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met, and I’m blessed to be one of those people.

When I was heading off to college, Peggy invited me to work at her store.  She was such a joy to work for. She had a unique gift for making you feel capable, even when you doubted yourself.

The next summer, Peggy encouraged me to apply for an event coordinator role downtown. Although I didn’t get the job, Peggy stepped in and advocated for me, convincing the director to hire me as an assistant. That summer was transformative. I worked hard, and by the end of the term, my boss told me, “You sell yourself short. You have so much to offer.” One of many lessons Peggy had a hand in teaching. 

The following year, I returned as the event manager, which launched my career in event planning and eventually led to starting my own company—all because Peggy believed in me and helped me believe in myself.

Peggy had a way of speaking life into others. She made everyone feel valued, capable, and seen. Her words stayed with me, and her encouragement shaped who I am today.

A couple of years ago, I felt prompted to tell Peggy how much she meant to me. When I called, she didn’t return my call, but I understood—she was a private person who didn’t accept compliments easily. While visiting Cape Breton, I made a point to visit her in person, and tell her how she impacted my life. I’m so glad I did…

Recently, I sent her a couple devotional books and a note when I heard of her health struggles. They arrived the day before she passed. While I don’t know if she saw them or my note, I trust she knew my heart.

Peggy’s example taught me our words have so much power and to use them to build others up. She planted so many seeds in my life, as I am sure she did in other lives. She left the world better than she found it. We will miss her dearly. A legend & friend to all.

Sad news and the loss of  a very important part of Cape Breton culture...Most years I would barge into her store doing (or starting) last minute Christmas shopping....Sympathy to her family.. Rest in Peace.....

Like many I am at a loss for words at this time. Peggy was one of a kind, she marched to her own tune, she was a perfect blend of kindness yet funny with a hint ( ok sometimes a large amount) of sarcasm. A true community minded person who always stepped up  to help others, whether promoting local musical artists, authors or donating items for fundraisers. One never knew where the conversation would lead with Peggy but I know it was always enjoyable and time flew while having it.We were fortunate to have her as our friend.
I am positive by now she has found her comfy spot, has a stack of books and cracked a good cold beer.
Rest in Peace Peggy you will be missed.

Peggy was a really cool person. Our paths crossed many different times. Whether it was in the shop, at a Lesley Crewe book launch,  at the CBRL or somewhere during celtic colors.  I stopped in her shop a few times over the last while. I am glad I did.  I always tried to pop in because you could find unique gifts.  The world got a little dimmer. RIP Peggy.

We too purchase things from her shop and she was alway so helpful sending CB Books to family far away.   Her shop was a treasure on Charlotte St.  She persevered thought construction and covid. I was very sorry to hear about Peggy’s passing. I spoke with her recently and we  talked about going to lunch . I have many fond memories of her especially at your Mon’s dining room table when you had us over. She was always so cheerful .  I know it is a difficult time for you on the loss of your sister ,  I will remember her in my prayers

Nora, From Barbara and me, our sincere condolences.  From several years ago involvement in politics, usually on opposite sides, in recent years during cruise ship season, and often meeting her out walking down to the store, it was always "Hi Barbara and Hi John" with a large and genuine smile.  Whether it be a tartan crested mug, a tartan tie or some other request, Peggy always came through with what we wanted to buy.    Her approach to business and how she treated customers was rare.  Her contribution to attracting cruise ships to Sydney and the economic benefits that brings was considerable. Peggy and the Curiosity Shop will be missed. 

On a more important and personal level, Peggy was always a boost to anyone's day with her consistently positive outlook and manner.  We are very fortunate to have had Peggy in our lives.  We need more like her.

Downtown Sydney will forever have a very big hole in it now for me and for many others no doubt. Those of us who went away for years always visited the Cape Breton Curiosity Shop when we came home. To buy music, books and all other manner of "Cape Breton Curiosities" to take back to our homes away from home. Peg seemed to know everyone and was loved by all. Always a word to each and every customer.

I met Peggy so many years ago when we both worked in the digs at Louisbourg, she was always the wittiest people in a room or then on the crew. Dear Nora and family,
We were shocked and saddened to see Peggy’s death notice in today’s paper. 
We have many happy memories of our years on Whitney Ave and being next door neighbours to Peggy and your parents. 
We were talking to Peggy as recently as 10 days ago with no sense of what was to come. 
We are going out of town and unfortunately are unable to attend the reception tomorrow.  We will be reminiscing and most certainly will always remember Peggy fondly.

I am heartbroken. John told me this morning and we looked at each other. Suddenly what didn't make sense, makes sense. Peggy called me not long ago to say she was retiring and I told her she couldn't! Who else was going to get me through a book launch?  Peggy would call me six times a day when we were in the throes of a new book to make plans. She did all the work while I dithered. 
She was a wonderful friend to me. I can't believe I'll never see her again. Her obituary is so her. I'm incredibly sad for her family and friends. I'm leaving tomorrow or I'd be at that party. Peggy was such a character. I will put her in a book one day. To remember her. She was one of a kind. I'm grateful our paths crossed in this world. I loved her.
