It is with both gratitude for his life and with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, adored father, father-in-law, grandfather, godfather, brother and uncle, Benedict "Spencer" Stevens. Surrounded by love and family in his home at Spencer's Lane, on Wednesday, June 9th, at the age of 70 Benedict went home to God.
Benedict was born on August 2nd, 1950, in Sydney, N.S. He was the son of the late Benedict and Margaret (Denny) Stevens. He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni.
Benedict was a dedicated hard worker all of his life and wore many hats throughout his lifetime. He cut pulp for many years, picked blueberries and potatoes in the State of Maine, bus driver, owned a taxi business, hospital taxi, pizza delivery person and was always starting new ventures. He enjoyed taking drives, playing cards, bingo and VLT's. He enjoyed the company of his friends and he deeply loved all the children that he encountered wherever that may be.
Benedict is survived by his loving wife, Arlene (Paul), son Scott (Aimee), his two daughters Angie and Alexis (Robert) all of Eskasoni. Dad/Ta'ta Spencer was loved so much by all his grandchildren; Jasmine, Bradley (B2), Hanna, Taylor, Paul, Ahnyss, Arlen, Scott, Rhanna and Ada.
Benedict is also survived by his aunt Virginia, his brothers; Robert (Audrey), Darren (Gail) of Eskasoni, Gerry of Membertou. His sisters Angela, Rhodena, Elizabeth, and Beverly all of Eskasoni. He will be missed dearly by his nieces and nephews who will remember their special Uncle Spencer forever. He is also survived by his Godchildren; Trudy, Mick, Jill, Evan, David, Jon, Tara, Kenna, Falon, Chantel, Colton and Plsit. Benedict had many special friends who he loved and who loved and treasured him, a true indication of a life well lived.
Benedict was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Beverly Ann, Marcia, Shirley and Sheila, his brothers Arnold, Clifford and Kevin and his godparents Roddie and Mary Catherine Stevens.
We the family would like to extend our thanks to the home care team, Eskasoni Primary Care and the CBRH Palliative Care. We are especially grateful for the awesome care given to Spencer by Daphne Marshall, Cheyenne Levi and Adam Elliot N.P..
A visitation for Spencer will take place at the Elder’s Center in Eskasoni starting at 7pm on Sunday, June 20. A family Funeral Mass will be held. Those wishing may attend virtually by joining the livestream on either ETV or on the Eskasoni First Nation Facebook Page starting at 10:30am on Tuesday, June 22.
