Agnes Marie Johnston (MacNeil) passed away peacefully on November 25, 2021 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney. Agnes was born to the late Michael and Jennie (MacArthur) MacNeil on August 5, 1932 in Sydney, NS. She was a much loved Mother, Nanny and Great-grandmother. She grew up on Davenport Road in Ashby and then in married life at their home on Grove Street. A devoted Catholic and faithful member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish and longtime member of the CWL. Prior to marriage, Agnes worked at Crowell’s. Family was most important to Agnes. She enjoyed baking lemon pies, banana loaves and family gatherings. She loved to chat with family and friends over a cup of tea and sweets.
She is survived by her sons; Michael (Sharon Andrews-Johnston), Dartmouth and Scott (Terri), Sydney. Grandchildren; Chris (Glenda), David and Matthew Townsend, all of Edmonton & Meghan and Emily Johnston of Dartmouth, Great-grandsons Chael and Dax Townsend of Edmonton. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Agnes was predeceased by her husband John ‘Jack’ Johnston in 1984 and daughter Linda Townsend in 2010 and infant twin of Linda. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was also predeceased by brothers; Arthur and Bernard and sisters; Margaret MacNeil, Helen Bates and Mary MacDonald.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 pm on Friday December 3, 2021, at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Masks and proof of vaccination is required to attend services. If so desired, donations in Mom’s name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.
