It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mom, nanny, sister and friend Margaret Jane Fraser, peacefully on January 8th, 2024, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.
Margaret was Born on November 4th, 1953, to the late Marcella (MacKinnon) and William Buchanan.
Margaret was one of 16 children and is now survived by her siblings John (Barb), Christy, Joe (Jessie), Theresa (Robert), Stanley (Patsy), Florence (Wilfred), Helen (Phillip), David (Alounda), Blair (Debbie), Byrdman, Wilma (Carl), Marie (Frank). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great - great nieces and nephews. Aunt Margaret will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Percy (Bobo) Alvin Fraser, parents Marcella and William Buchanan and brothers Peter (Carm), Paul (Anna) Simon (infancy).
Margaret was one of the first fisherwomen of Bay St Lawrence. She fished side by side with her husband for many years. Together they built a beautiful life and raised 3 children. Robert (Carol), Billy (Victoria), Marie (Jason), and as nanny would always say Byrd “he was my first baby”. Margaret’s love continued to grow. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, she loved each one unconditionally; Blake, Gavin, Lyndsey, Jaclyn, Raquel, Grayson, Percy and Lochlin.
Margaret was filled with love and wisdom. She was a generous and kind soul. “Ma” as she was known to many never let you leave her house without a full stomach or a cup of tea. She showed her love for people through baking. From Carrot cakes, freshly baked bread, molasses cookies, and blueberry muffins to the random box of sweets and jam she would drop off to someone in the community. She found great joy in giving.
Nanny had a green thumb that could bring any plant to life. She took pride in her plants and flowers and had a deep connection with the land and sea. In her later years she spent her time fishing, traveling the world with her sisters and lifelong friends, quilting, picking blueberries, playing cards, and spending time with her grandbabies. She loved music, she loved to dance, and she enjoyed being surrounded by the company of lots of family and friends. She always saw the positive in life and in people.
Special Thank you to palliative care Dr John Ritter, Paulette Levin and Staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital for their kind hearts, care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place, and a visitation will be held at Margaret’s home (14 Mack buck Lane Bay St Lawrence) on Thursday, January 11th, 2024, after 2:00pm. A graveside service will be held at the United Church Cemetery in Bay St Lawrence on Friday January 12th at 11am.
