Born in Quincy, a daughter of Constance (Erickson) Johnson, of Quincy and the late Norman Johnson, she has been a resident of Somerset since 1969. A graduate of Quincy High School, class of 1960, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Simmons College in 1964 and her Master’s Degree also in Mathematics from Northeastern University in 1967.
Mrs. Hoy was employed as a Mathematics Professor at Bristol Community College where she headed the Student Math League. She was an active member of the Congregational Christian Church United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School. An avid antique collector, she was very talented and enjoyed arts and crafts and sewing.
In addition to her mother and former husband, she is survived by two children; Melissa H. Elliott and her husband Jeffrey of Broadway, VA and William “Bill” R. Hoy of Berkley, one sister; Karin Dempsey and her husband Mark of Weymouth, one brother; Stephen Johnson of Quincy, two grandchildren; Benjamin and Emily Elliott and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Kurt Johnson.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 10:00AM in the Congregational Christian Church United Church of Christ, 1411 County St., Somerset. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00PM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardner’s Neck Rd., Swansea. Burial will be private. Contributions in her honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 146 Clifford St., Providence, RI 02903 or the Congregational Christian Church, 1411 County St., Somerset, MA 02726.
