I was a student of Mrs. Hoy, in her calculus I and II classes at BCC, 2011. Most of my alumni probably remember her as a rigid or inflexible professor;  one of my classmates asked her, in April 2011, if calc-2 was difficult, to which she replied: "Compared to calc-1, it is extremely rigorous and fast-paced... if you thought calc-1 was difficult, you will not make it through calc-2." And she was right; I remember half of my class showed up for the calc-2 lecture following our first exam. I had no training in math prior to her class, I was a highschool freshman drop-out who decided to go to college at 24, and managed to score high enough to enter her class. I remember the first day with her, how lost I was, and how she spent hours after class explaining basic trigonometry and algebraic concepts like a rabbit explaining speed to a turtle. But through her patience, I managed a perfect score on the calc-2 final, with an A+ final score. Mrs. Hoy was the best teacher I've ever had, and I credit my success in engineering and confidence in mathematics to her encouragement and warm, loyal patient nature. Thank you forever, Mrs. Hoy. I hope your new home is beautiful.

Please accept our deepest sympathies. Sue was a gentle, caring soul who never failed to say hello and ask after me, my husband and son (all BCC employees for many years). Her infectious smile, dedication, soft voice and calming presence will leave a giant void in all our lives.

Sue was a fantastic person. We meet here at BCC and soon discovered that we were both graduates of Simmons College. We served on many BCC committees together and I will always remember her bright smile and cheerful disposition.  She will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences to Sue's family.  I knew Sue through BCC.  When I found out I had diabetes Sue talked with me for over an hour in her office.  She was always the nicest person, and always had time to be supportive.

To the Hoy family,
I was saddened to hear of Sue's passing. She was a very warm and caring person who made everyone feel welcomed. I will especially miss our conversations about local politics.

Dear Bill and the entire family, I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hoy 3 times over my years at bcc. She was such an amazing teacher and without her I would not have done as well as I did. She was always so sweet and funny. She had so much love and compassion for her family and even her students. She will be missed dearly and forever in the hearts of many many students.

Your mother (Sue) was a valuable member of the mathematics department at Bristol CC for many years.  As it should be, her students were her #1 priority.  She was always available to help them and she guided many students through statistics, Calculus and other courses.  She maintained high standards in the development of curriculum and in her courses.

Beyond her attention to students, she made many contributions to the department and the College, including her delicious baked goods for many events and the hand-crafted, thoughtful and appropriate "favors" that she made for many retirement dinners in the last 20+ years.

My years at Bristol Community College are full of stories of laughter and love from colleagues who accepted me into the BCC family and treated me with grace. I never fail to smile when I see the sign on my bookshelf -- a reminder of Sue's boundless energy, wonderful commitment to our students, and passion for life!

My prayers are with myou and your family at this time of need  she will be missed that i8s for sure. everyone knew her and what a great person she was .

I was sad when I heard that Susan passed away, I was planning to visit her and show her how far I have come since she is the one who told me to go on to get a Bachelors degree. She is the best teacher I have ever had. I remember when  she brought in cookies to the student math league, they were the BEST cookies! I will never forget her. She will be dearly missed by everybody. My deepest condolence to her family, friends, coworkers, cats, and students.

Please know that Susan's BCC friends, like me, and her students also, are thinking of you and missing her, too. Some of her students have spoken with me and have said that they were enjoying class with Susan and are stunned to find themselves without her. Many have said they send on their prayers. You have mine, as well.

Susan was a fun, generous person whom I have known for most of my many years at the college. I had the opportunity to work with her on multiple occasions. What a kind, enthusiastic lady! I still have many of her striking craft projects given as favors from the many events she helped plan at BCC.

I can truly say the college will not be the same without my friend and colleague, Susan.
