Ronald P. “Ronnie” Walker, age 82, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 31, 2023 in Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of Moira (Sherlock) Walker with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late Herbert T. and Hazel (Macfarlane) Walker, he was a lifelong resident of Swansea.
He attended Joseph Case High School, graduated from Suffield Academy, Class of 1959 and attended classes at Rollins College in Florida. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Vietnam War. As a young man, Ron worked for his family’s grain and lumber business, McKenzie Winslow. Ron proudly served for 26 years on the Swansea Police Department and was a longtime volunteer Firefighter for the Swansea Fire Department. After retirement from public service, Ron started his own company, Walker’s Landscaping, which he enjoyed until the day he passed.
An active resident of the Town of Swansea, he served in many capacities over the years ranging from Harbor Master, volunteering on the Conservation Commission, a lifelong member of the Coles River Club and acting as a corporator at Bay Coast Bank. With a love and deep respect for the water, he delighted in sailing and restoring antique wooden boats. A skilled woodworker, he could often be found in his workshop crafting his latest project from plans to reality.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Adam Walker and his wife Elisabeth of Littleton, MA; one daughter, Kara Kovacs and her husband Joseph of Dalton, MA; one brother Thomas M. Walker and his wife Joan of Swansea; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Ian Walker and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Service will be Thursday, September 7th at 10:00 AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea followed by burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Swansea. Visiting hours are Wednesday, September 6th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.
