I was one of his many students around the early 2010’s and I was forever inspired by his ceaseless passion, wit, and devotion when it came to teaching. Lighthearted and eager, he was one of the earliest teachers I had that truly made learning a fun, developmental, time for each of us that were under his wing. Much love to him, his family, and all that had the pleasure to know him!

Mr.Holyoke  was St.John best teacher!!!He was a great man.

It was many years ago that I met Jay and his family on Halloween. That was the beginning of a  35 year friendship.  Scott and Becky dressed like Pee Wee Herman and became "pen pals" , Mark video taping his dad and the dance recital. Friends of Mark, Jay letting me be the first to read his book, sharing in the joy and sorrow of Mark. 's life.  Marks's positive attitude through all his hospital stays and a Dad who never gave up hope. You left this Earth too soon - the world is a better place because you were in it.  RIP  and hope that you are united with your son.

I was in 6th grade when Mr. Hoyle came to St John's. My brother, Ed was in his first 7th grade class. He looked so young, we thought he was a new student. I remember the copious notes we took in history class, the Friday afternoon softball games at Willett field, and his desk drawer where he kept all the yo-yos and other stuff he confiscated during class. I had three younger siblings who went through his class and we all have many "Hoyle" stories. He was a dedicated teacher and family man. My sincere condolences to Dale and family. We were lucky to have known him.

Condolences to the entire Hoyle Family. Mr. Hoyle was a great teacher, role model and all around amazing person. A kind heart who really cared about other people. His memory will live on in the many people he impacted over the years. He will surely be missed.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Hoyle family.   Mr. Hoyle was an amazing teacher who inspired all  of his students.  I thank him for inspiring me during my middle school years.  He was the best!

I remember when Jay started at St John's  I was in the 6th grade . He loved to teach  and love to hit you with the demerits . He gave me a nickname of El Buffalo and made it easier to fit in and he discovered that I really loved history too.  When I graduated in 1972 he lobbied to have me write class profercy and I did it. I still have it as a keepsake thanks to him. Later when I went to Feehan he heard that I had interest as carpenter. When my dad past away when I was a freshman he was there for me.  When  I  graduated in 76 he checked up on me again.   He made a difference in my life and his lessons and character traits lives on with me and countless number of students that came into his class room.  God love you and your family , you were a a real treasure in my life.

He was and still is the teacher who made the biggest impression on me especially when he gave out demerits (spelling?)!


Beginning as roommates at St. A's, Jay and our families have been friends for more than half a century.  Jay leaves behind a legacy of a loving husband and father, grandfather and a teacher extraordinaire.  He will forever be known as a wonderful family man and a committed and nurturing educator.  Much like diamonds that are precious and few, so too was Jay's lifelong friendship.  Goodbye, good friend.  You will be forever missed but not forgotten, Pete and Pam Barry

I am so deeply saddened by the news of Jay's passing.  He was my 2nd year roommate at St. Anselm's and a true friend in the passing years.  I will cherish the times we shared.  He and his wonderful family will be in my prayers.  Thanks Jay for showing me how to do life.

Mr. Hoyle had a very large impact on my life as a teacher at Saint John’s .  My love of history came from his passion of teaching it.  Later on he made that same impact on my children.  Even taking the time to help my son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout by working with him on three mandatory merit badges.   He was truly one of those teacher you’ll never forget and to be thankful for all the life lessons he taught you even though back then you didn’t realize it. 

I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Hoyle's passing! He was one of my favorite teachers during my years at St. John's, tough but always fair. Whenever I think of him, I instantly hear him saying "Livingston, demerit!" I tried very hard not to get three demerits because I didn't want the punishment of writing 500 words! One of my fondest memories is our field trip to Howe's Caverns. I remember that he brought his son, and we all loved having him with us! The world has lost an amazing man. And, I will always cherish the memories of him!

Jay was a good friend. He and Dale were always welcoming when I visited from my home in Maryland. I spent several nights thanks to their kindness.
Jay and I were born the same year, were history teachers and have the same middle name. Like Jay,  I am a New England sports fan.
We are the better because he was part of our lives. May he rest in peace.

I worked with Jay at St. John the Evangelist School. Jay was such a dedicated teacher to all of his students as well as to the school in which he spent 50 years! Rest In Peace, my friend.
