Gregory J. Tavares, “Greg”, age 67, of Swansea, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Anne L. (Leddy) Tavares to whom he had been married for the past 45 years.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of Pauline (Mello) Tavares of Fall River and her late husband Daniel Tavares and the late Joseph Arruda and his late wife Rena Arruda. He spent his youth in Swansea, graduating from Joseph Case High School in 1973 and spent over 40 years living in Assonet before returning to Swansea.
Mr. Tavares had owned several businesses throughout his life, including D.E.E. Transportation, Sakonnet Associates and G.J. Tavares Trucking. For the past several years, he had worked as a project manager for T & K Asphalt in Whitman. Greg was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and a member of the Fall River Lodge of Elks. He absolutely loved spending time with family and friends, laughing with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. Greg stayed busy with his endless ongoing home projects that might never have been finished, because he always came up with the next best great idea! He found joy and comfort in his daily crossword puzzles and watching his favorite shows in the evenings with his wife. Whenever Greg was asked his opinion, there was no gray area. Most importantly, Greg was the go-to person when you needed something done.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Stefanie Tavares-Gagnier and her husband Nicholas Gagnier of East Freetown, Jillian Figueroa of Assonet and Gregg Tavares of Dallas, TX; his son-in-law, Anthony Figueroa; seven siblings, Gary Arruda of Fall River, Daniel Tavares of Seekonk, Dana Arruda of Sebastian, FL, Cynthia Hanna of The Villages, FL, Paul Tavares of Bonita Springs, FL, Sheila Tavares-Higginbottom of Swansea and Todd Arruda of Fall River, six grandchildren, Bryce, Solangel, Mya, Seraphina, Jayce and Stone and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 10:00AM at St. Bernard’s Church, 30 South Main Street, Assonet, MA. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea, MA. Relatives and friends are invited.
