Gary I. Horton, age 71, of Swansea, passed away Friday, April 21, 2023 at Saint Anne’s Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was the husband of Chongsuk (Pak) Horton to whom he has been married for the past 48 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Claude and Evelyn Mayo Horton, he spent his youth in Swansea. He lived throughout the country during his distinguished military career before returning back home to Swansea.
He attended Joseph Case High School and Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was a career military Veteran retiring after 22 years of service as a Sergeant First Class, E7. He cherished his time in the military and service to his country remained tantamount to his heart. Thus, after retiring from military service, he chose military adjacent professions; first as a range safety officer at Fort Dix Army Base in New Jersey and then in Boston in the Army Health and Recruiting office. He was also a proud, longtime member of the Disabled American Veterans. An avid sports fan, he loved the ocean and enjoyed sailing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Carol Pak-Teng and her husband Edward Teng of Summit, NJ; one son, Edward Horton and his wife Lisa of Independence, MO; one brother, Allen Horton and his wife Sheila of Canton, OH; four grandchildren, Chelsea Teng, Nadia Teng, Edward “EJ” Horton Jr., Lyla Teng and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Richard Horton. He loved his family as dearly as he loved his country.
Private arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea.
