Arthur Lopes

Arthur Lopes, age 86, of Swansea, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Juliette M. “Julie” (Sanson) Lopes to whom he has been married for the past sixty years.

Born in Agua de Pau, Acores, Portugal, a son of the late Alvaro and Maria (Pacheco) Lopes, he immigrated to the United States in 1954 and has been a resident of Swansea for sixty years.

Arthur was a laborer in the construction industry for many years prior to his retirement. After retirement, he worked in the Bakery at Stop and Shop in Somerset.

A car enthusiast, he was the proud owner of a Mustang, convertible Mazda Miata and Fiat. He enjoyed taking trips to the casinos but most of all he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Anne-Marie Mello and her husband Stephen of Swansea; one son, Arthur E. Lopes and his wife Lisa of Greenville, SC; one brother, Victor Lopes of Westport; two sisters, Maria Medeiros of the Azores and Maria Angelina Oliveira of Somerset; six grandsons, Justin Brown and his wife Sandra of Fall River, Zachary Brown and his Fiance Tiffany of Lakeville, Alec Brown and his wife Stephanie of Somerset, Brendan Lopes and his wife Marissa of Taylors, SC, Joshua Lopes and his wife Leah of Greer, SC, Cory Lopes of Greenvile, SC and seven great-grandchildren, Amelia, Isabelle, Jeanie, Mia, Beckett and Paxton. He was the brother of the late Duarte and Carl Lopes and great-grandfather of the late Gabriela Rae Brown.

His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 8:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00AM in Saint John of God Church, 1036 Brayton Ave, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the Franciscan Children’s Hospital, 30 Warren St., Brighton, MA 02135 in loving memory of his late great-granddaughter Gabriela Rae Brown or to franciscanchildrens.org. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Somerset.
