It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Anne Nelson (née Lines) at the age of 89. Shirley struggled with heart failure and osteoporosis for many years but remained positive and as active as possible. She passed much as she lived, surrounded by family.
Shirley was born on the family farm near Abbey, Saskatchewan, one of eight children. She won the Governor General’s Academic Medal when she graduated from high school, then moved to Medicine Hat to attend Business College. There she met Ed Nelson and they were married in 1953. While in Medicine Hat, they had 5 children, four daughters and a son. In 1965, the family moved to British Columbia.
Shirley was an amazing and loving mother, a homemaker, bookkeeper, sewing teacher, world traveler, and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, baking and making antipasto. She loved people, making new friends, telling jokes and hosting large boisterous family gatherings – a tradition happily continued by her children.
Shirley is survived by her husband Ed, sister Beatrice, children Marna (Michael), Debi, Laurelle (Alvin), Tom (Charlotte), son-in-law Bert and twelve grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter Judie and son-in-law Harry.
A celebration of life will be held at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28th Avenue, Surrey, on Saturday, April 6th at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation Endowment Fund #55174 or a charity of your choice.
