John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Whyte and children Bradley Whyte (Megi), Heather Hill (Dave), Joanne Berka (Brian). Also remembering their ‘Pops’ are his six grandchildren Mackenzie, Spencer, Cameron, Allison, Logan and Julia. John was predeceased by his son Stephen in 2018.
John grew up in North Vancouver attending Queen Mary, Lonsdale and North Van High Schools. He played football for the North Shore Cougars. From 1959-1999, he lived in Dunbar, moving to South Surrey after his retirement, where he lived for 24 years.
John attended UBC and after graduating, began his 40-year Teaching and Administrative career with the Vancouver School Board. He worked at Killarney, Van Tech, Livingstone, Maquinna, Begbie, McKechnie, Queen Mary and Laurier schools. He also coached basketball at Lord Byng from 1981-85.
John strived for a quiet and simple life. He was passionate about many things; his family, his friends, daily naps, hot baths and his dog Muffin. He enjoyed playing golf, Grizzlies basketball and TV sports. John loved travelling and spent time in Palm Springs, Osoyoos and Disneyland where he took each of his grandchildren when they turned 5! His vegetable gardens were his pride and joy and he even built his own backyard putting green.
