November 6, 1944 – December 2, 2024
John Rostron, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on December 2, 2024, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 80 years old.
John was born on November 6, 1944, in Bristol, England, to Arthur and Betty Rostron. In 1957, the family emigrated to Canada, arriving first in Comox, BC where John’s father was stationed at the air base and then settling in Victoria. A talented athlete, John attended Oak Bay High School, excelling in track and soccer, and later pursued his academic interests at the University of Victoria. He earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in geography and economics, moved to Nanaimo, BC to begin a distinguished academic, managerial and business career.
In the early 1970s John welcomed two children, Gavin and Sara with Faye Hoffman. In 1985, John married Katherine (Kathy) Caldwell, blending families with Kathy’s children, Christopher and Jennifer.
John was a dedicated educator and administrator, serving as a college professor of geography and later as a registrar, assistant dean, dean, and vice president. His career also included consulting work, with significant contributions abroad, particularly in Guyana, Indonesia and Jordan. Based on his work abroad, John formed an international consulting practice with Kathy which they ran until their repatriation to Canada in 2012. During his years in Jakarta and Bali, John developed a deep appreciation for the culture and people, supporting numerous families and charitable causes.
A man of many interests, John found joy in travel, boating, fishing, football (particularly the Bolton Wanderers and the British Premier League), and "puttering" around the home. His generosity, kindness, and thoughtfulness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
John is lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 40 years, Katherine, and his children: Gavin (Lenny), Sara (Darren), Christopher (Shannon), and Jennifer (Steve). He was a proud grandfather to Glenn, Gwenyth, Brandon (Megan), Caitlyn, Kaya, Emily, Paige, Matthew, Bradley, and Daniel. John was predeceased by his sister Janet.
A celebration of life will be held on December 13, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Dignity Memorial, 14831 28 Avenue, Surrey, BC. A service will be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation.
John’s family expresses their gratitude to all who supported them during this time of loss. His legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.
