JEAN ELIZABETH HARRIS (Woolley)
(August 21, 1923 - July 2, 2016)
It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Harris announce her passing on July 2nd, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Jean was born on August 21st, 1923, the third child and only daughter of Grant and Elizabeth Woolley. She was raised on a farm between the villages of Corinth and Brownsville, Ontario with her two brothers, Arthur and Earle. Her schooling included attending Public and Junior High School in Brownsville and Senior High School in Tilsonburg. Jean loved the farm animals and had a very nurturing and compassionate nature, which led her to enter the nursing profession, graduating from the Woodstock General Hospital School for Nurses in 1944. While in training, a handsome young soldier from Alberta, George Frederick Harris, caught her eye at a dance and their growing romance continued as they corresponded during his overseas military service. Upon his return, Jean and George were married on July 2nd, 1945 on the family farm and the young newlyweds moved to Edmonton, Alberta shortly after.
Their family grew over the years with the birth of three daughters, Patricia (Pat), Sandra (Sandy), and Shirley. Dancing remained an important part of their marriage and they became avid members of the Edmonton square dancing community. Jean loved summers spent at their cabin on Pigeon Lake where friends and the family, which expanded to include 3 son-in-laws, Jim, Rick, Garth, and 10 grandchildren, gathered to enjoy time together. She felt deeply the death of George in 2001 and experienced further loss with the death of her oldest daughter, Pat (Dublanko), in 2004.
Jean will be remembered as a kind friend to many and serving others came naturally to her. After many years in Edmonton, Jean spent her last years in Surrey, BC. Jean was a very caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and is lovingly remembered by her surviving daughters, Sandra (Sandy) Taylor (Rick) and Shirley Rowe (Garth), son-in-law Jim Dublanko, 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Our family will remember and keep in our hearts our sweet Mom, Grandma and
Great-Grandma, Jean
... with sorrow as our mortal association comes to a close,
... with gratitude for her kind and nurturing nature,
... with joy at her release from a failing body and reunion with loved ones gone before,
... with love!
A family inurnment service will be held at a later date.
