Mrs. Ivy Muriel Boundy was born the second child of Swen and Alma Petersen on April 28, 1929 in Coronation, Alberta and passed away peacefully at Westminster House Retirement Community in B.C. on Monday, September 21st, 2020, at the age of ninety-one.
As a young girl, Ivy moved with her family to Calgary, where she became an active member of the Salvation Army. She came to the west coast in 1949 and worked as a seamstress for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Vancouver. Ivy joined St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church and joined the church youth group, where in 1954 she met another youth-group member, Dean Boundy. Romance blossomed, she said yes when Dean proposed, and they were wed at St. Andrew’s Wesley in 1956.
Ivy was the much-loved mother of her four children: Evelyn, Edwin, Howard, and Karen, devoting her life to raising a wonderful family. She may be best remembered for her many unassuming gifts. She was a remarkable seamstress. She made dresses, works of needlepoint, and exquisite decorations for the home. When she wasn’t baking one of her incomparable raisin pies or bread loaves, she was bringing her voice to songs of praise in church choirs on Sunday mornings, at mid-week rehearsals, and at Christmas and Easter celebrations. Ivy was a member of the Kent Street Choristers for many years, and took voice lessons because she strived always to become a better singer.
A seamstress and singer and cook, Ivy was also a prodigious reader, consuming everything from Agatha Christie’s whodunits to Winston Churchill’s twelve-volume The Second World War and four-volume History of the English Speaking Peoples. Ivy often shared her stories of growing up during the Great Depression and the war, and how she learned to appreciate even the smallest things in life.
A devout Christian, Ivy loved to travel and the Holy Land may have been her destination of choice. When she and Dean visited Israel for the first time in 1975, she was able to realize a lifelong dream of receiving the sacrament of baptism in the River Jordan. During travels in Greece, she set a goal to walk in the steps of St. Paul.
Ivy and Dean retired to South Surrey in 1989, where for years they would walk the staircases down to the beach and back up again almost every day. She loved the promenade and the pier, where long years before, she had taken her children to enjoy the sand and sea and catch sight of Mt. Baker and Peace Arch off to the east.
For the last three years Ivy lived at Westminster House in South Surrey. The mother of four, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of two, Ivy passed into God’s care on the morning of the last day of summer—just as the first rays of sunlight were reaching her window and bestowing their blessing upon her. May she rest in peace, knowing her family and friends will forever love her and cherish her memory.
Ivy is survived by her husband, Dean; daughters, Evelyn (Jerry) Moore and Karen (Tony) Cavezza; sons, Edwin (Caroline) Boundy, Howard (Sarah) Boundy; and by her sisters, Edith (Kip) Scott and Rachel (David) Kirk.
