SULPHUR-Mrs. Linda Lee McClendon Walker, the wonderful mother of three and devoted wife of 47 years, peacefully left this earth to once again meet her adoring husband and our Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 4, 2012. Born on May 21, 1931 to Lee Etta and Shannon McClendon in Oklahoma, Linda was a Sulphur, Louisiana resident for over seven decades and a 1948 graduate of Sulphur High School. She then attended McNeese Junior College prior to marrying her lifelong sweetheart, Burton R. Walker, from the Sulphur Class of ’46 and a recent graduate of Southwestern Louisiana University. While “Bert” was serving in the United States Air force in Illinois, Linda gave birth to their first child, Deborah Lynn. After his honorable discharge the couple and their toddler returned to Sulphur where each lived their lives to the fullest and had two more children, a son, David, and a second baby girl, Laura Faye.
Linda’s passions, besides her family, were the joys of painting, writing short stories and poetry, studying philosophy and psychology while also taking Literature classes at McNeese State University. Watching movie classics, comedies and listening to Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson and classical music thrilled her in her later years, along with the love and joy she shared with her six grandchildren; Ryan Walker, James, Aaron and Eric Guidry, and Lindsey and Carly Walker. Linda loved watching sports and was especially excited about watching the LSU Tigers, her favorite team, and never missed the NCAA college basketball tournament, Super Bowl or World Series.
Linda was preceded in her passing by her parents, husband and younger sister, Geraldine Billings. A private Memorial service for Linda’s family members will be scheduled in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Cancer Society in Linda’s name.
