While attending Sulphur High School he was a member of the cross-country team and sang with the Barbershop Quartet. He graduated from Sulphur High in 1976. After High School his love of music continued and led to the formation of The Roy Rockit Band. He was an amazing vocalist and his relationships with his former bandmates continued for years including long awaited reunions where they would jam. John wasn’t just a rock and roll man, he was also a very hard worker and retired from Certainteed after 20 years.
As a son, John was diligent and helpful to his mom. As a father he provided a consistent emotional stability to all 5 of his children. He knew each one as an individual and could always connect with them according to their interests. John happily welcomed four son-in-laws into his family. In addition, he gained a new title as Poppah Doc to his eight grandchildren. John was a beloved friend to many and never met a stranger. He loved spending time with his family and friends, playing music, and endless dance parties. He was a smart, witty man who could find the humor in things through his unique way that others may have missed. His off-the-wall observations would make everyone laugh and then think, “Yeah, he's right about that!” He was a kind fellow, intelligent, funny, and never malicious.
Just being with family and friends can sometimes be called “the little things in life”. John definitely loved the little things in life and there was quite a list of little things he loved. Like saving a little money. There was no limit to how far he’d drive to save a few little pennies on a bag of beans. He loved collecting little objects to squirrel away for his kids and grandkids- shiny pennies (that he’d save buying beans), acorns, old cigar boxes, and other treasures.
John is survived by his daughter Jennifer Reid (Brian) of Noblesville, Indiana; his son John Jordan Dougherty of Lake Charles, Louisiana; his daughter Nan Erin Shook (Taylor) of Sulphur, Louisiana; his daughter Mary Burge (Taylor) of Ragley, Louisiana and his daughter Laura Dougherty (Dustin Johnson) of Sulphur, Louisiana; the mother of his children, Jenny Dougherty; his grandchildren, Alex, Max, Brooke, Willow, Quinn, Oaklan, Leo and Rosalee; his brothers Tim and Brian; his sisters Theresa, Mary and Trudy.
