He was a native of Vinton and a longtime resident of Carlyss where he was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He served in the Louisiana National Guard for 6 years and was a member of Boilermakers Local 79. Cliff was a farmer and rancher most of his life, was the past manager of Lawton Grain, had served on the board of directors of Vinton Cooperative Grain Dryer, and most recently was the co-owner of Shady Oaks Kennel. In addition to caring for animals, he loved gardening, playing poker, and hunting. Most of all, he will be remembered for his tenacious, non-negotiable devotion to his family.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Dora Marcantel Johnson of Carlyss; his two daughters, Sylvia Johnson Grant and husband, Todd of LaPorte, Texas, and Dayna Johnson Peoples and husband, Randy of Austin, Texas; his grandson, Patrick Peoples; and his step-granddaughter, Haley Grant. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillie Johnson; and his brother, Joseph Johnson, Jr.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, in St. Theresa Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Aquino will officiate. Burial will be in Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. today with a rosary service at 7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Heart of Hospice for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Cliff's memory to the American Cancer Society.
