He was a native and longtime resident of Lake Charles before moving to Sulphur in 1998. He was a member of Houston River Baptist Church. Charles enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and was considered a "Jack of all Trades" being able to fix just about anything, was a Ham Radio Operator, and an artist. He was a great musician and could play just about any instrument put before him. He was an Instrument Technician before becoming an electrician and had been employed with I.B.E.W. Local #861. Above all, Charles loved his family dearly and would be considered in their eyes to be the best husband, father, and grandfather in the universe.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Betty Canfield of Sulphur; his four children, Cheryl McKay and husband, Joe of Austin, Texas, Anne Chamberlain and husband, Randy of Charlotte, North Carolina, Candy Fassler and husband, Richard of Lake Charles, and Charles "Chuck" Canfield and wife, Tammy of Sulphur; twelve grandchildren, Brian Chamberlain, Kara Self, Holly Hungerford-Kresser, Christian Chamberlain, Shannon Richardson, Jenny Hungerford, Haley Nelson, Jason Fassler, Aaron Canfield, Amanda Fontenot, Molly Rowan, and Alicia Hardy; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Ethel Canfield; and his siblings, Frank Canfield and Louise Gray.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 7, in Houston River Baptist Church. The Rev. Lonnie Gothrup will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Lake Charles under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitaton is from 4-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Monday in the church.
