Marion Hyland Dorr

MARION HYLAND DORR, age 100, devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother, died peacefully Tuesday, December 9, 2014, in Houston, TX, surrounded by her children. Marion was born on May 27, 1914, in Joliet, IL, to Claudia and James L. Hyland.

As the wife of a Texaco executive, Marion was accustomed to relocating her family regularly. She was adept at making new friends and making the transitions as seamless as possible for her family. She was a gracious hostess who loved to entertain friends and her husband’s colleagues. In retirement, Marion and Frank lived in Quail Valley, and enjoyed a good game of bridge or poker, golfing and spending time with friends, neighbors, and family. Above all, Marion was principled and grounded in her Catholic faith. She was devout and unwavering in her beliefs, which guided her in living life and raising her children. Marion, affectionately known as “Mars”, gave generously, lived vivaciously, and loved deeply.

Marion was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Frank D. Dorr; sisters, Dorothy Farnsworth and Kathryn Meyers; and son-in-law, Curt Darnell. She is survived by her children, Larry Dorr and wife Nancy, Frank Dorr and wife Melinda, and Susan Darnell; granddaughter, Dawsey Romero and husband Roland; great-granddaughters, Lily and Piper; numerous and much beloved nieces and nephews; and dear life-long friend, Marie “Cookie” Cook.

Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 3:00 PM to 5:00PM, Sunday, December 14, 2014, at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land (Williams Trace Exit), with a Rosary to be recited at 4:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 15, 2014, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Dr., Houston. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, in Houston.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the compassionate caregivers and nurses who assisted Marion in the last years of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.
