Lonnie Murphy was born to Robert and Margot Murphy in Bryan, TX on November 19, 1958. Lonnie, known for his kindness and thoughtfulness, passed unexpectedly and far too soon on October 4, 2024 at the age of 65. Lonnie will be laid to rest at the Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, TX. Lonnie loved the Texas hill country where he enjoyed spending time outside, gazing at the stars, and playing golf with friends and family.
Lonnie, the oldest of 4 siblings, grew up in Dallas and attended Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was the class president in 1977. A second generation and lifelong Aggie, Lonnie earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M in 1981. On August 18, 1984, Lonnie and Barbara were married at St. John’s Methodist Church in Georgetown, TX. Over a 40-year career in the oil and gas industry Lonnie worked in Denver, Dallas, and Houston for Enserch Exploration and DeGolyer and MacNaughton. The last few years were devoted to various contract projects. Lonnie and Barbara were blessed with two sons. Michael and his wife Jessica live in Lakewood, Colorado and have son Oscar (3) and another son due in January 2025. Blaine and his wife Holly live in Houston, Texas and have Fraser (4) and Lucy (1).
An avid golfer, Lonnie had a long-time close-knit group of friends he regularly played with in the Texas Hill Country who will miss him deeply. However, his favorite playing partners were his sons and grandsons, who will have a large hole in their lives now that their “Pops” has passed.
A firm believer in Christ, Lonnie was a longtime member at Parkway United Methodist Church in Sugar Land, TX. He served on the church’s board for the past 3 years. He is described as kind, thoughtful, and considerate by his friends in the church small group and will be greatly missed by the church.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his mother Margot. Lonnie is survived by his wife Barbara, his father Pat, his siblings Larry Murphy and his wife Kathie, Colleen and her husband Bob Hedke, and Kathleen and her husband David Caldwell, his son Michael and wife Jessica, his son Blaine and wife Holly, his grandchildren Fraser, Oscar, and Lucy, as well as nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues that will miss him dearly.
A service to celebrate Lonnie’s life will be held at Parkway United Methodist Church in Sugar Land, Texas, on October 19, 2024, at 4 PM and will be preceded by a visitation at the Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home in Sugar Land, Texas on October 18, 2024 at 5 PM.
