Claudia Burks Metting

Claudia Metting, 71, passed away in her home on April 2, 2024. She was born on December 30, 1952 in San Francisco, California but moved to Texas as a young child. She married her husband, Jim Metting, in 1977 and together they built a family of four.

Claudia’s life was marked by her commitment to care for others. As a nurse, she dedicated herself to the well-being of her patients, both as a NICU & ICU nurse and later as an elementary school nurse with Fort Bend ISD. She always prioritized the needs of others. Through her service activities at New Hope Lutheran Church, she helped set up The New Hope Clinic (a medical clinic for the poor which eventually became affiliated with East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry and is now home to the local food pantry and thrift shop) and Fort Bend Family Promise (a local organization that provides shelter, meals, and support to homeless families in Fort Bend County).

Claudia never met a stranger. She possessed a rare gift of connecting with people from all walks of life. She was a natural chatterbox, funny, caring, silly, quick witted, and slightly inappropriate at times. She loved the outdoors – going on walks, riding bikes, and reading books in her backyard under shade trees.

In 2006, shortly after her kids graduated college, Jim and Claudia were supposed to be starting a new stage of life. But, unfortunately, Claudia came down with health issues. After countless doctor visits and a trip to Mayo Clinic, Claudia’s health was declining. She faced a number of issues – everything from rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, peripheral neuropathy and much more. She looked great on the outside, but was hurting all over inside.

Throughout her struggles, Claudia drew strength from her family, especially her beloved grandchildren who held a special place in her heart. Known as Oma to the grandchildren, she put on a brave face for them and formed a relationship that was unique and special. She connected deeply with each of them and they shared many laughs. The grandchildren knew her struggles and prayed for Oma to be pain free.

Claudia is survived by her devoted husband, Jim, her loving children Bryan Metting of Sugar Land (wife Dana) and Julie Ewing of Round Rock (husband Blake), and her cherished grandchildren Ashley (12) and Adam Metting (9), and Morgan (11), James (9), and Robert Ewing (7). She’s also survived by her siblings – Nancy Andrews, Catherine Steffano and David Burks.

May Claudia rest in peace, finally free from pain, and may her legacy of love, compassion, humor, and resilience be cherished by those who knew her.
