With sparkles in her blue eyes and a welcoming smile, Annie Estelle Key Fulton, was a loving and lovable woman. She always enjoyed sharing stories and memories, and her face would light up the room when speaking of her family, her flowers and plants, and her love of cooking and collecting recipes. She especially loved to treat friends to chicken and dumplings!
Having grown up in Beaumont, Texas, the daughter of Fielding Breeden Key and Ura Lee Lampley Key, she was a child of the Great Depression and the effects of that period in our country’s history, and in her life in particular, were never far from her mind. She would tell stories of how her family’s home was marked by transients, suffering and in need as the result of the depression, as one of the homes they knew food would be provided. This empathy and compassion followed Estelle throughout her life.
Estelle graduated from the University of Texas and had a long administrative work history in various industries.
She enjoyed having the opportunity to travel around the world with her husband, Dan P. Fulton, and especially loved her time in Switzerland. Estelle was married to Dan for 62 years. She loved being a wife and mother. Her oldest son, Donald Michael Fulton, and his wife Arlynn, live in Sugar Land, TX. Timothy Dan Fulton and his wife, Crystal Wolfe, live in Bryan, Texas. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Bridget, German (Miso), and Karl Matamoros-Mota in Ponder, TX; Patrick, Christina, Lucia, and James Revell in Janesville, WI. Estelle had one sister, Evelyn Key Brown, who is deceased, and a nephew Kevin Brown.
When recently asked what the favorite part of her life was over the years, she didn’t hesitate in saying being a mother—she loved being a mother! She shared many stories about her boys, Don and Tim—the good stories and the challenging stories you might imagine. She spoke of her pride in both of her children. And when she could combine her love of cooking by making brownies for Tim, or shrimp curry for Don, it brought her such great joy.
She once described the best gifts to give her as anything she could read, plant, or eat. A woman of simple joys indeed.
We will always remember Estelle as soft-spoken, gentle, generous with her love, and a great friend to many. We will also remember her love of her family, her determination to stay in touch with friends and family—friendships and relationships she held dearly and brought her such great joy.
And after 94 years and a life well lived, Estelle went to heaven on October 19, 2022.
