He was born to Nicholas and Concetta Sansone of the Bronx, NY on January 3rd, 1934. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School. He then earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Manhattan College. He received his master’s degree from NYU and then completed his doctorate in education from Columbia University.
A lifelong educator, he worked in the Pearl River CSD starting as a teacher and rising to central administration in 25 plus years before moving on to East Hanover Township of NJ and serving as Superintendent of Schools for another 20 years. He was actively involved in Sons of Italy of Tuxedo, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the “geezers” at Church of The Presentation.
He is preceded in death by his sister and husband Anne and Nicholas Viviani, and brother-in law Fred Vasti.
He is survived by his wife Joan Bracco Sansone of Tuxedo, NY; his sister Palma Vasti of Nanuet, NY; his three children James Sansone of Suffern, NY, Joanne and Dennis Verboys of Highland Mills, NY, and John and Jennifer Sansone of Warwick, NY; his beloved grandchildren Kathryn, Caroline and Michael Kelly, and Nicholas Verboys; and Matthew, Hannah and Brian Sansone. He is also survived by many adored nieces and nephews. Poppy Sal, as he was affectionately known, was an avid conversationalist, reader, athlete, sports fan (Brooklyn Dodgers turned NY Yankees fan) and most of all cherished time at LBI with family and friends. He was a dearing and loving husband, devoted father, and beloved grandfather, uncle and friend to all.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation on August 26th from 5-8 p.m. and a Memorial Mass on August 27th at 10 a.m., both at the Church of The Presentation, Upper Saddle River, NJ.
