Pauline was born and raised in Barbados, West Indies where she attended and graduated from the Modern High School. Pauline enjoyed sports-she ran track in her school days and was an avid spectator of soccer, basketball, and cricket. She enjoyed her beautiful island frequenting the beach and enjoying seaside activities and socials. Pauline was raised in the countryside abounding with farm animals which she enjoyed. She loved nature, beautiful plants and flowers were her delight. Pauline had an eye for fine aesthetics and style. During her time in Barbados she did professional cake decorating, designing and sewing of clothes and interior decor. Her young professional life started as a stenographer for Standard Agency. Pauline was part of a large family with six other siblings. Being one of the youngest of the siblings, she became “Aunt Paul” to many nieces and nephews as a young woman.
Pauline always strove for something better for herself and her family and moved to England in the early 60’s in search of a better life. There she was joined by her fiance, Percival (Percy), who she married in 1962. A year later, the couple welcomed their first and only child, Christine. After a short time the family returned to Barbados, but Pauline still seeking something better applied for a Visa to Canada and the United States.
The opportunity to go to Canada presented itself first and she, with her husband and child, started life in Canada. The winters were harsh for a family from the tropical climate of Barbados. Shortly thereafter, the Visa for the United States came through and again the family returned to Barbados and prepared for life in the United States. After sampling the big country experiences Pauline was determined to make it work in the United States. After a short time Pauline and Percy were able to secure good jobs in New York and started to build their lives. Pauline worked for Jacobi Medical Center for over 25 years which was a big part of her life at that time. Her natural ability to be a good listener, counselor and advisor was often in play during both her professional and personal life.
Strewn throughout her years was a love of travel. She welcomed opportunities to discover new places as well as visit her family in various countries. As her daughter got married, she welcomed an ever expanding family into her life.
After retirement, Pauline delighted in her grandchildren becoming popular with the stay-at-home moms. As her grandchildren grew, she remained a guiding force in their lives pushing them to accomplish their academic pursuits. In the past few years as Pauline’s physical abilities declined due to kidney disease, she was cared for lovingly by her husband of nearly 58 years. Her husband and daughter feel blessed to have had time with her as she transitioned this life for her life with the Lord.
