Mary T. Keane, 62, of Gambrills, MD, died after a short battle with ovarian cancer on October 21, 2020. She was born on April 17 in the Bronx, NY, to Thomas and the late Ann E. Hogan Keane. She lived her childhood in Suffern, NY, and went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Business from Dominican College of Blauvelt and master’s degree in Health Care Administration from Carnegie Mellon University. After a successful career in health care administration in New York City and Pittsburgh, PA, she worked for George Washington University Medical School in Washington, DC., where she eventually became Chief Financial Officer. Mary volunteered as a tutor and mentor for many years and changed careers to become a middle school math teacher. She obtained a master’s degree in Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University and has worked for Anne Arundel County School District for the past 19 years. She began teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math at McArthur Middle School on Fort Meade and, 5 years ago, moved to Mary Moss Alternative School in Annapolis. Mary loved teaching and excelled at engaging her students in learning in new and creative ways. She worked to make math fun and was passionate about assuring her students obtain the essential academic skills to succeed both in school and life.
Mary was an out of the box thinker and innovator. She was a master problem solver and had a quick wit. Not only an avid sports fan, Mary enjoyed live theatre and Broadway performances, especially Cirque du Soleil. She loved traveling to new places and spending time at the beach. Always concerned about the needs of others, Mary never hesitated to get involved to help. She organized and cooked meals for the homeless, ran a local food pantry, adopted pets that needed homes, and more. Whatever she did, Mary strove to make a difference. Smart, fun-loving, and compassionate, a loyal friend and cherished colleague, Mary was simply a joy to be around.
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Thomas Walsh, her father, Thomas Keane, siblings - Ann, Thomas, Andrew (Susan), and Eileen Cassidy (Ed), as well as 14 nieces & nephews – Rob, Patrick, Andrew, Tom, Shannon, Molly, Grace, Tori, Audrey, Erin, Claire, Michael, Matthew, and David.
