Beloved by his family, friends, patients, and colleagues, George was known as a knowledgeable and compassionate physician who cared about treating the whole patient, not just their symptoms. He was a tenderhearted husband who fiercely adored his wife and family. And he would gladly invite you to church and share scriptures to remind you that God works “...all things together for good to those who love him and are called according to his purpose.”
Born May 4, 1935, in New York City, George was the second child of Dr. Herald and Marion Cox. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1957, he earned his medical degree from NYU, and pursued further training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Yale, along with two years of service with the Navy.
In 1968, George launched his medical practice in his hometown of Suffern, NY, and continued working at Good Samaritan Hospital for the next 55 years. He also served as the Medical Director of United Hospice of Rockland County. George loved the practice of medicine, he respected the talented men and women who worked alongside him, and he was honored by the trust bestowed upon him by his patients.
Together with his beloved wife Joan, they raised four daughters Debbie LeCates (Bill), Sharon Hujik (Peter), Alison Cox, and Liz Sauer (JD). Anyone who spoke with Dr. Cox saw how immensely proud he was of “his girls” and patiently listened as he shared pictures and stories about their interests and accomplishments. And if given the opportunity, he would invite you to join his family, often loving on people who never had the opportunity to experience the care of an earthly father.
Despite being a lifelong churchgoer, George became passionate about his faith in the early 1980s. Since then, he devoted a significant portion of his personal life to the study of Christian thinking, looking for ways to embody the love of God in a broken world. For many years he served as an Elder at All Souls Community Church and loved the fellowship that he experienced there.
In addition to his wife and daughters, George is survived by his brother Gordon (Dodie), his grandchildren Abby, Grace, Henry, Luke, John, Nora, and Olivia, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored.
The abiding theme of George’s life was love; unabashed, never-ending, and unqualified love. Patients experienced it, friends participated in it, and his family was forged in it. He will be profoundly missed.
