John Sheehan of Suffern, NY, passed away Sunday, January 15 at Nyack Ridge Rehabilitation & Nursing. He was born on April 13, 1939 in Bronx, NY to Daniel and Bridget (Cox) Sheehan. He graduated from St. Simon Stock High School in Bronx, NY, in 1958. He grew up in the Highbridge section of the Bronx where he made many friends that he remained close to his entire life, especially Jim Sullivan who visited him often and was by his side when he passed.
John married Rita O’Brien in 1964. They lived in Yonkers NY until 1968 when they moved to Stony Point to be close to friends and relatives and resided there for over 20 years. They raised four children together.
John enjoyed socializing with his family and friends and was often the life of the party. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and would often sing Irish songs around the house and at family gatherings. He loved hearing bagpipes. He was a Yonkers police officer for 20 years. He enjoyed his years on the force and made great lifelong friends. He marched in several Yonkers St Patrick’s day parades with the Yonkers Police Department. He was also an avid Giants and Mets fan.
John met his longtime partner, Diane Michaud, over 30 years ago. They enjoyed traveling; he loved his trip to his homeland of Ireland. When John became ill, Diane visited him faithfully.
He is survived by his daughter, Terry Abate (Chris) of CT, sons, Dan (Jill) and Jim (Flerida), both of Stony Point NY and Dennis (Melissa) of NJ; and grandchildren Crystal, Adam, Dylan, Austin, Kaley, Brianne, Riley, Danny and Joe. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters Mary Rooney and Eileen King; nephew Brendan Rooney and ex-wife Rita.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 19th from 3:00-7:00pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service, Stony Point. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, January 20th at the Church of Immaculate Conception, Stony Point at 10:00am, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
