It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Randy, peacefully at home with family at his side, Randy ended his journey on January 11, 2022.
Randy’s passion was for his family, his place at the lake, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Curling and his collector cars. He was happy in his yard! Watering the plants, cutting grass, and just being outside with Marley. Randy and Barb married in 1978. Their life was full and with lots of love.
Randy was so proud of his sons and the men they became. Travelling to all parts of the world to watch his sons play baseball – California, Texas, Ohio, Arizona, Kansas, The Netherlands, Germany and all throughout Canada. And the annual trip to visit his son Simon and family in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba was a must. A surprise trip to New Zealand, that he had no idea they were taking, until Dave called, and Barb said “we’re coming to visit!” Meeting our lifelong friends the Frasers, by chance on the other side of the world was a bonus.
He loved the sun, and sitting and watching a baseball game. Especially if his boy’s were on the field. Always the most positive parent in the stands, sometimes so nervous he had to find a spot on his own to watch, because he cared so much.
The CFL and the Blue Bombers were a big part of the family life, going to games with his sons, hosting friends for Grey Cup parties, and watching them win Back to Back Grey Cups in November 2021! Oh what a day that was for Randy.
Whether he was driving his collector cars, tinkering in the garage, or driving to Buck Lake on the weekend. Randy made many lifelong friends, and was always so happy to hear from them and catchup. So many stories….
He spent many hours volunteering for various organizations, the last 6 years with the Parkland Food Bank. He loved to get up early and go to “work”, to help and give back to others. Always an early riser, often being the 1st to open the door, wherever that work was. But there was never a shortage of food at our house! Randy made sure of that, always wanting everyone to be comfortable.
His career took the family from Wpg to Thunder Bay, Calgary (twice!) and Edmonton (twice!). He managed all types of businesses, from small to large corporations – with up to 400 staff. He knew most of them by name. Spending most of his career in the retail industry, but you name a field. Randy likely had done it. He respected his employees, and we remember him telling people “Never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself”. Randy could do whatever he made up his mind to do. If he didn’t know how to do something, he’d figure it out. He always believed in himself and those he surrounded himself with. Randy believed everyone was capable of whatever they set their mind to do.
Randy leaves to mourn him a loving family, Wife Barb of 43+ years, 3 Sons, Simon Avanthay (Kim), Aaron Dunsmore, & Tyler Dunsmore. Grandsons Aidan & Austin Avanthay, Brother Lyle Dunsmore(Ann), Sisters Lorraine (Bob) Finsten, Karen (Pat) Berrel. To name only a few of the Large family he and Barb shared and loved.
Predeceased by parents Trevor and Dorothy Dunsmore, and sister Iris Nichol.
A Celebration of Life is planned for summer 2022
