Brother Miguel Lozano O.F.M. (Franciscan Friar) also known to many as “Uncle Eddie” died peacefully at his home in Stockton, surrounded by his loving family and friends on Sunday December 3th, 2017 at the age of 91. Eddie Lozano is the son of the late Jesus Lozano and Soledad Cordero Lozano. He is survived by his sisters Dee Dee Garcia, his eldest sister Mary Espitia, Five half-sisters and four half-brothers. He is proceeded in death by his brothers Tony Lozano, Joe Lozano, Fidel Lozano and Lalo Lozano.
At the age of 18, Eddie left Stockton to join the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Santa Barbara, he received the Franciscan Habit and his new name, Brother Miguel Lozano O.F.M. In 1949 Brother Miguel made his simple Vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Three years later in 1952 Brother Miguel made his Solemn Vows for life.
The Early Years: From 1948 – 1959, Brother Miguel was stationed at the Old Mission San Miguel in California. During these 11 years Miguel became a Tailor, he made Habits for the Province and the Missionaries in the Philippines. He also, shared his faith with the youth in crisis at the Juvenile Detention Center in Paso Robles.
Ministry: In 1968, Brother Miguel was given permission to help the Capital de Los Ninos Orphanage in Durango, Mexico. Brother Miguel spend the next three years working with these children. In 1971 the Bishop Miguel Gonzales of Capital Obregon asked Miguel to establish an Orphanage in Guaymas Sonora, Mexico. On January 12, 1972 with the aid of three nuns from Sacred Heart, Brother Miguel opened the doors of a new Orphanage.
The Orphanage Hogar Paz y Bien/Home of Peace and Good, was founded and Directed by Brother Miguel Lozano. It helped comfort and care for thousands of children of all ages over the years. The Orphanage was able to house 33 children living there and 31 daycare children. The Orphanage continues today to open their doors and hearts to the needy children of neighboring cities and villages in Guaymas Mexico.
Brother Miguel attended daily Mass at Saint Mary’s Church for as long as he could. He loved to participate with many activities of the church. He was instrumental in the creation of the “Third Order” lay people devoted to the Franciscan Way.
Brother Miguel Lozano, lived daily life following the way of Saint Francis of Assis. He was a kind human being with compassion beyond understanding. He was an inspiration to his family and friends and he touched the hearts of many people who came to know him. We will miss you Brother Miguel - Uncle Eddie! Rest in Peace.
DeYoung Memorial Chapel has been honored to serve the Lozano family. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 from 5-7 pm followed by a Rosary at 7pm at DeYoung Memorial Chapel, 601 N. California St. Stockton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 10am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 203 Washington St, Stockton. The family has requested all donations be made to Bro. Miguel’s orphanage Hogar Paz y Bien Memorial Fund at Financial Center Credit Union Account # 162458
