Jan Elaine Swart was born on May 6, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia to Lloyd Erskine Kimsey and Betty Jean Kimsey. Through conversations with Jan, it was revealed that as a young child, she accepted Jesus into her life as Lord and Savior. Her family stands in praise knowing that her acceptance of Jesus led to her learning how to depend on God.
As a young girl, Jan spent a lot of time at her grandmother's home while her mother worked daily. One of the highlights of spending so much time at her grandmother's was getting to see her best friend, Billie. They were as close as any two sisters could be!
It was in her young adult years that Jan began to battle against substance abuse. Her battles as a young adult was something she never shied away from talking about. Because it was her breakthrough and victory that strengthened her and caused her to look differently at the most important relationships around her. Getting clean caused Jan to look at life in a new way and discover a love for adventure... such as going to the beach and riding motorcycles.
Her love for people and taking care of others, led her into the housekeeping profession. Taking care of others was Jan's joy and she did it with humility.
In 2016, Jan moved in with her son, Andy and his wife, Tonya, after the passing of her mother and certain health issues started to arise. Even though Jan endured struggles in her earlier years in life, she was able to renew her faith through the help of her family. She did so by recommitting her life to God, finding joy and salvation through attending Stockbridge Community Church, and connecting with a women's group that brought new friendships into her life. She fought a hard and good fight and enjoyed life as much as she could even until the end.
Jan preceded in life her father, Lloyd Erskine Kimsey, mother, Betty Jean Ramsey, and sister, Alison. She leaves to mourn two children, Richard (Latonya) Tumlin of McDonough, Georgia and Andrea (David Mayer) Kitsch of Salina, Kansas; ten grandchildren, Andrew Swart, Aliyah (Amillio) Avina, Alissa Tumlin, Anthony Kitsch, Abbigail Kitsch, Ava Mayer, Alexis Saffo, Jaquon Giles, Jede Nail, and Elijah Nail; seven great-grandchildren; three siblings, Arnold Kimsey, Adelia Kimsey, and Athelia Kimsey; a host of other relatives and friends.
Awie, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved her family. She also loved reading books, watching old black and white movies and TV shows, and loving on her dog, Izzy. To know her was to know her laughter and the love she had for her grandchildren.
Today we celebrate her life and legacy!
