He grew up in Georgia and attended Decatur High School and, following graduation, studied auto mechanics at technical college. Cullen joined the US Army in 1967 at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, where he studied avionics and radio mechanics. Cullen was awarded the Sharpshooter Badge (rifle). After receiving an honorable discharge, he reverted to the Georgia Army National Guard to complete his military service of six years as an avionics mechanic. His mechanical expertise was considered to be beyond measure by family and friends he helped with car and motorcycle repairs.

During that time he had a column in the church newsletter titled, ‘Cullen’s Corner,’ in which he encouraged the congregation to be a part of the Sunday School program. He also sang in the choir at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church in Porterdale, Georgia.
Known for his wonderful sense of humor, Cullen was loved dearly by his family and his many friends and will be truly missed. His was a life to be celebrated as we join together in the promise of The Resurrection.
