Born on January 23, 1937 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Reaves Evans and Mamie Douglas Evans. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Hayden Burke Hamby; son, Scottie Lynn Hamby, brothers, Bill Evans and Tommy Evans, and sister, Brenda White.
Phyllis was a faithful member of South River Baptist Church. She was a talented seamstress who created custom-made draperies. She was musically talented and was the organist and pianist at several different churches in her life. She also enjoyed creating blueprints for houses.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, Hayden Burke “Tim” Hamby Jr. and wife Ruth, and Ricky Lee “Rick” Hamby; sisters, Allie Moose, and Judy Underwood; sister-in-law, Doris Evans, four grandchildren, Timothy (Christina) Hamby, Terrance (Alida) Hamby, Jonathan Hamby, and Sarah Rebecca Hamby, and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bunch Johnson Funeral Home. The funeral will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Chaplain Tangela Cameron officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at South River Baptist Church Cemetery.
