He was born December 23, 1948, in Iredell County and was a son of the late Roger Sherman and Elsie Miller Wilcox. He was a member of Monticello Baptist Church. He attended Iredell County Schools and earned his high school diploma while serving in the U. S. Army. He served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. His accomodations awarded include: The Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge and Sharpshooter (M-14 Rifle) and (M-16 Rifle). He also graduated from Catawba Valley Technical College in 1974 with an Applied Science Degree and was the Manager and mold maker at Monticello Pottery. He was also an avid deer hunter.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Alvina Johnson Wilcox; a son, Mark Roger Wilcox and his wife, Renee of Statesville; and a daughter, Jennie W. Martin and her husband, David, of Statesville. He was the very proud grandfather of Micah Martin and Hunter Martin. He is also survived by his siblings, Jeanette M. Warren of Statesville, Larry Miller and his wife, Marie of Statesville, Renae Parker and her husband, Claman, of Hickory and Sharon Burgess and her husband, Ricky, of Hiddenite. Additional survivors include an uncle, Garland Wilcox, an aunt, Anna W. Wooten and husband, Michael, 12 nieces and nephews, 24 great nieces and nephews and 5 great great nieces and nephews along with his special friends, Dale Wilson and Dr. Stanley Sliwinski.
Services celebrating Mr. Wilcox's life will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday April 8, 2013 at Monticello Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Henderson officiating. He will lie in state at the church from 12:30 until the funeral hour while the family receives friends. Burial will follow with full military rites at Iredell Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Derrick Bass, Rusty Warren, Terry Wingler, Audie Warren, Mitch Walker, Chris Miller, Gary Wingler, Marcos Harnandez and Pablo Harnandez.
