She was born March 2, 1920, in Wilkes County and was the daughter of the late John Minton and Virginia Adams Lowe. She was a devout Christian and a committed homemaker and mother. She was a member of Front Street Baptist Church and volunteered on overseas mission trips. She was a graduate of Statesville High School and Mitchell Community College. She was an accredited landscape designer, a member of the Statesville and Troutman Garden Clubs and received the Mayor’s Cup for downtown Statesville improvements. As an accomplished artist, she was a member of the Local Artist Guild and was a singer with the Mitchell Community College Choir. She planted a grove of trees in Mac Anderson Park in memory of her son and was a past regent of the DAR.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Eric Matheny; and one grandchild.
She is survived by her husband, Cloyce Matheny, whom she married on September 19, 1942; a daughter, Gail Kathleen Houston (John) of Massillon, OH; two sons, Larry Dale Matheny (Elizabeth) of Wilmington and Gilbert Bruce Matheny (Kay) of Sylva; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Minnie Lowe of Hiddenite.
Funeral services celebrating Kitty’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at Front Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Stutts, the Rev. Marvin Boyer, and the Rev. Jeff Luxon officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour and burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
