William J. O'Brien, age 92, of Staten Island, New York passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023. Bill was born in Brooklyn on May 20, 1931. He was brought to Staten Island in the summer of 1936. He attended St. Peter’s Elementary High School. He served in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps during the Korean War. In 1956, he started work for the New York Telephone Company. In 1988 he retired as a manager from NYNEX.
He was active in the American Legion, he served as commander of Watkins-Kellett Post (1973-1974) and again from (2002-2003). He was also a County Commander: District Commander. He was the first secretary treasurer for the Cpl. A. F. Kivlehan chapter of the Korean War Veterans. He was a life member of the Catholic War Veteran’s and Knights of Columbus. He was an active blood donor having donated over 128 pints/16 gallons.
His wife, Margaret Polher of 49 years passed in 2008. He is survived by his daughters, Anne and Patricia, his granddaughter Maggie, and his sister Jane Gebhardt. He was very proud of the fact that he and his wife visited all 50 States in the U.S.
A visitation for William will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A visitation will occur Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Clare Church, 110 Nelson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10308. A committal service will occur Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 12:15 PM at Resurrection Cemetery, 361 Sharrott Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309.
