Vincent J. Scamardella of Meiers Corners on April 13, 2017. Beloved Husband of the late Eileen (nee de la Pena). Loving Father of Vincent M., Paul, Nancy Fiorino and Eileen Fisher. Dear grandfather of Vincent J. Scamardella, Daniel and Michael Fisher and Laura Picarello. Cherished great grandfather of Giancarlo, Sebastian and Nicholas. Adored brother of Anna Stilwell, Sophie Ackerman, and the late Matthew, Joseph, Louis Scamardella and Rita Oliver.
He and his late wife celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2015. He worked as a chemist for Proctor & Gamble (Port Ivory) for 35 yrs. Vincent served his country in the Army Air Corps as an infantryman and Medic during WWII attaining the rank of Sgt. Major. He was awarded the Meritorious Service award and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
Mr. Scamardella is best known for his involvement in the sport of Softball. Considered the "Father of Modified Pitch Softball”, his name is synonymous with the sport on Staten Island. After a career as windmill fast pitch hurler during which he threw 1 perfect game and 30 no-hitters (2 in one day) he became an umpire and then Regional Vice President of the Amateur Softball Assn. In 1970 he located an unused plot of land in Travis and with the help of former Borough President Ralph Lamberti arranged a lease with NY City and built the first lighted softball field on SI. He was inducted into the Softball Hall of Honor in Oklahoma City in 1980.
He also enjoyed paddle ball which he played three days a week at the YMCA Broadway until he was 90.
Funeral from the Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave. SI on Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial, St. Teresa’s Church 10:45 am .Interment Moravian Cemetery. Friends will be received Monday from 7pm - 9pm and Tuesday from 2pm - 4pm & 7pm - 9pm.
