Katherine A. Benson

Katherine Ann (Guttler) Benson, age 81, passed away on May 16, 2023, at her home in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island. She was the widow of James C Benson. They shared 58 years of marriage together.

Born in West Brighton, Staten Island NY, she was the daughter of George and Lillian Guttler and the sister of John W Guttler (deceased.) She attended Curtis High School and graduated in 1959. She studied and graduated with her Bachelors in Education at Wagner College, from 1959-1963, where she met her husband, James. Katherine was a preschool teacher at Zion Lutheran Church Preschool for over a decade. She was a member of the PS 45 PTA, volunteered at Snug Harbor Little League, and was an active bowler in the St. Mary's Bowling League for years.

Katherine will be remembered for her great affection for her children and grandchildren. She loved when they would come over to play and visit to spend time together. Being a Mimi to her grandchildren was her favorite job in life. She will be remembered for her sweet treats for her grandchildren, especially brownies, being an avid reader, and watching her favorite shows Blue Bloods, Law and Order SVU and Chicago Fire.

She was predeceased by her husband, James C Benson and her son, Mark J Benson. She is survived by her daughters Donna J. Salvatore, Mary Ann Virga, her son-in-law Greg Virga; her daughter Jill K. Benson, her partner Deborah Falk; her daughter-in-law Denise Benson, and her grandchildren Jaclyn Benson, Emily Virga, Gina Benson, Ryan Virga, Jake Salvatore, Kaleigh Salvatore, Joseph Mondello, Grace Mondello, and Liana Salvatore.

The viewing will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 3pm-6:30pm; with the funeral at 6:30pm-7pm both at Casey Funeral Home at 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY.
