STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Great Kills resident Joseph A. Palamara, 92, of Clearwater, Fla., the loving patriarch of three generations, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he moved to Great Kills in 1965. He relocated to Clearwater in 1990.
Mr. Palamara served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A member of Company K, 29th Infantry Regiment, he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and saw combat in fierce fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes.
He worked as a dockbuilder and was a member of Local 1456 of the Dockbuilders Union. He retired in 1981.
Mr. Palamara was a member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans and volunteered for the Mended Hearts of Clearwater.
He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Josephine Charnik; his sons, Bart, James, Joseph and Douglas; a sister, Juliet Labozzetta, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Clare’s R.C. Church, both in Great Kills. Burial will follow in Woodbridge (N.J.) Memorial Gardens.
