James was born to James Joseph Cooney Sr. and Viola Fredrick, April 20, 1955, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from New Dorp High School and received an Associates Degree from Brooklyn College.
He leaves as his legacy 2 children: Kelli Cooney, James Cooney and son-in-law Michael Legate. He also leaves to cherish his memory his 2 siblings and their spouses. Maureen Cicero (sister), Robert Cicero (brother-in-law), Peter Cooney (brother), Diane Francis (spouse). His children remember him as a hero and a man that will be forever cherished.
He was preceded in death by Viola Fredrick, (mother), Carol Cooney, (sister), James J. Cooney Sr. (father).
James was a NYC Firefighter until he retired in 2007 and was passionate about affecting the most positive change in people. He dedicated countless hours and effort to the Great Kills Swim Club and was remembered as a great coach to all.
A wake is scheduled for Saturday October 19, 2019 and Sunday October 20th, 2019, from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm at Casey McCullum Rice, 30 Nelson Avenue Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday October 21st, 2019 at St. Clare’s Church, 110 Nelson Avenue Staten Island, NY 10308.
