Owen Mack Zuckert, 92, passed away peacefully on August 16 from heart failure. He was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn (née Schwartz) Zuckert and the son of Sidney and Doris Zuckert. Owen was born on May 27, 1932, in Lawrence, NY.
Early on, Owen, his younger brother Don, and his family moved to Stamford, Connecticut, a city he would call home for the remainder of his life. Owen attended Burdick Middle School, and graduated from The King School in 1950. He went on to Bowdoin College where he graduated cum laude in three years. After graduation Owen went on to Columbia University School of Law, where he was a member of the Class of 1956.
After graduating from law school, Owen served on active duty with the United States Army in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, where he qualified as an expert marksman. Following many years of reserve service, Owen was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Major.
Owen was an expert in trusts and estates law. He began his private practice in partnership with his father, and when his father retired, he co founded his own law firm. Later in his career, he followed his philanthropic leanings by joining the United Way of Tri-State and the United Way of New York City as Vice President and General Counsel. Following his years of service with the United Way, he returned to private practice until his retirement.
Owen was a strong advocate for equality and fairness and lived a life dedicated to giving back to the community. Owen was passionate about working to make a positive impact for his hometown of Stamford. To that end, he was a founding member of the Urban League of Stamford, was on the Board of the Red Cross of Stamford, and served on the Stamford Board of Taxation. He also served as the Chair of the Budget Committee of The United Fund (later the United Way) of Stamford, Connecticut. In 1973 Owen received the Outstanding Citizenship Award from the United Way Executive Council in recognition of his decades of service.
In the 1990’s, Owen served as Chairman of the Board of The Rehab Center of Stamford and oversaw its merger into Stamford Hospital. Following the merger, he served on the Board of Stamford Hospital.
Owen married the love of his life, Marilyn, in 1956. After her passing, he moved to Bedford, New York, remaining actively involved in his adopted community as an election volunteer and poll worker. In his retirement, Owen loved to laugh, watch the NY Yankees and UConn Women’s Basketball, and to spend time with his grandchildren.
Owen was predeceased by his wife of nearly 46 years, Marilyn, and his brother Donald. He is survived by his two children and their spouses, his son Evan (Alison), daughter Deborah (Ira), and grandchildren Cameron (Heather), Samantha, Alexander (Chloe), and Keleigh. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Susan.
