Mona Y. Sawyer passed away on November 30, 2023 at age 91. Born in Macomb, Illinois Jan.2, 1932. Mona earned a bachelors degree plus graduate courses at Western Illinois University, also in Macomb.
She taught high school business courses before moving to New York City. In NYC, Mona worked in industrial advertising until 1966 when she married Howard G. "Scotty" Sawyer. They moved to Stamford, CT where Mona established her own antique business "Mona Sawyer Antiques." After having a shop on Long Ridge Road, she showed at local antique shows as well as Chicago, Nantucket, Richmond, etc.
Mona enjoyed many interests. Her grandfather was a tailor and, at age 8, she inherited his sewing machine. From that time on she made all of her clothes, Including tailored coats and suits, until getting started in antiques. High on the list was needlepoint and petit point which was exhibited at various Stamford locations. When Harry Hilbert taught her how to make Nantucket baskets, she kept at it until 118 were made. Obviously never having idle hands!
Mona will be interred at WIU Columbarium overlooking the WIU campus in Macomb.
