Mary Wynn

Mary Leah Nachamson Wynn, 96, passed away peacefully at home the DAY of March, 2013. She resided at Edgehill in Stamford, Connecticut since 1999. Formerly she lived in South Florida with her husband Harold Wynn, who passed away August 6,1998. Mary was the sixth daughter of eight girls and one boy, the ninth child. She is the last member of the Nachamson family to have lived.

Mary was born in Kinston, North Carolina on June 8th 1916. Shortly after her birth, her parents, Jenny Lee Bloom & Eli Hillel Nachamson, moved from Kinston to Durham, North Carolina where Mary grew up. They started the first United Department Stores in the south. All the children worked alongside their mama & papa in the store throughout their youth.

Both parents had beautiful singing voices. Music, singing, and dancing were a way of life in their home. Mary was the child who had the gift of voice. She was known as “the little girl with the big voice.” After high school she studied music and voice in New York City as a (collatura) soprano. She was going to continue her studies in Italy when Mussolini came into power and her trip was cancelled. As fate had it, she stayed in New York performing in night clubs, auditioning for Broadway shows and continuing her studies in opera. She met the love of her life, Harold Wynn of Brooklyn, New York, who came to see her sing week after week. They were married January 18, 1942. During WWII, Harold served in the US Army Air Corp as a Chief Warrant Officer.

They began a warm, loving, close-knit family with the birth of Jennifer Lapine, December 1944. In 1948 they moved to Miami Beach, Florida where another daughter, Marvi Segal was born November, 1948. A son, Kenneth Hill Wynn, was born August, 1950. Mary continued to sing wherever she lived. She sang for hospital functions, March of Dimes, Cerebal Palsy benefits, Temple Emanual functions and choir, community events in Miami Beach and Miami, as well as numerous family reunions and special occasions.

In 1958, the Wynn family moved to South Miami. She became an interior designer and with her artistic talents she designed homes, apartments and business showrooms. She also planned unusual and creative party events and fundraisers. Most of all she was a loving, devoted, and caring wife, mother and homemaker.

Mary was fun loving, beautiful, witty, kind and and a giving and generous person. As an artist, she gave her children the inherent knowledge of how art makes people more humane. For all who knew her or heard her sing, her magnificent clear-toned soprano voice will sing in our hearts forever.

Mary’s mother’s last words were, “always be good to each other” a family motto taught to her by her parents and a belief she always lived and passed on to her children throughout her life.

She is survived by her three children, Jennifer Lapine and her husband, Mark Lapine of Stamford, Connecticut, Marvi Segal and her husband, Mike Segal of Chiefland, Florida, and Kenneth Wynn and his wife, Patti Wynn of Miami, Florida. Three grandchildren, Seth Lapine and his wife Eve of Stamford, Connecticut, Noah Lapine and his wife Holly Lapine

of Stamford, Connecticut and Sarna Lapine of New York City, New York and six great grandchildren, Olivia, Mason, & Garret Lapine, Maddie, Lilly, and Ethan Lapine.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Sunday, March 31st at Temple Beth El Cemetery at 350 Roxbury Road in Stamford, CT
