On November 22, 2016, Leslie “Les” Meyers, age 95, peacefully passed away at his home. Born August 20th, 1921, he was a native of Bridgeport, but was a long-time community member of Stamford. Les was a resident of the Atria Assisted Living Community in Stamford.
Les is survived by his wife, Sylvia Grossinger Meyers of Stamford, his daughter, Sherry Meyers Meeks and husband Phil Meeks of New York, NY, his son, Marty Meyers and wife Suzanne Meyers of Middlebury, CT, grandchildren Chelsea Meeks Kaplan and husband Rick of Bethesda, MD, Carey Meyers and husband Steven Kane of Brooklyn, NY and Matthew Meyers and wife Fran Lartigue of New Marlborough, MA and great-grandchildren Zach, Drew and Ben Kaplan, Madeleine and Elliot Meyers-Kane and Mirabelle, Isaac and Quinn Meyers.
Les was a veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He was a dedicated member of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) of the United States, Fred Robbins Post 142 of Stamford, and once served as the JWV’s Connecticut state commander. An active member of the Stamford community, Les, along with wife Sylvia, was a decades-long volunteer at the Stamford Jewish Community Center’s Senior Program. He led current events lectures, taught Mah Jongg and served lunches to the program’s senior citizens. In 2000, Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy honored Les with the Citizen of the Year award for outstanding efforts in and services to the Stamford community.
A memorial service celebrating Les’s life with be held on Monday, November 28th at 1:00 p.m. at the Atria Stamford at 77 3rd Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Museum of American Jewish Military History at 1811 R St. NW, Washington, DC, 20009 or the Stamford JCC at 458 Lakeside Dr., Stamford, CT, 06903.
