Grace Smith, 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 59 years Jim “Smitty” Smith. Grace is survived by six children: Judy Provoost and her husband Jack of Old Greenwich; Jim Smith and his wife Jill of Danbury; Jack Smith and Sue Kipphut of Norwalk; Jill Vannie and her husband Michael of Middletown; Joy Papazidis and her husband Tom of Trumbull; and Joel Smith of Stamford.
She was predeceased by her grandson John, and survived by her grandchildren, Michael, Jenny, David, Cindy, Jessica, Kelly, Julia, Jackie, Justin, Christopher, and Nicholas as well as many great-grandchildren.
Born in 1926 to William and Mary Lane, she was one of ten children. She is survived by her sisters Irene Curry and Marie Jara and her sisters-in-law Dottie Murphy and her husband Bill, and Betty Wilson and her husband Clarence, and her brother-in-law Lou DelVecchio. She was predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Woodhall, Mildred Murphy, Alice McAuliffe, Rita Lane, Mabel Labore, Patty DelVecchio and her brother William Lane. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was devoted to her family. She returned to work in 1979 and worked for 17 years at Omega Engineering in Stamford until her retirement. Visiting hours will be held Friday October 28, 2011 from 4-8 pm at The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A prayer service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 10 a.m. at The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery.
