Francis (Frank) Joseph Charlton, died Jan. 30 at home in Southport, CT. He was 86 and a former 30 year resident of Westport, CT.
He was born on April 29, 1926 in Fitchburg, MA, the third of seven children to the late Kathleen and Francis Charlton. He was married to and well-cared for by Jay Charlton, his loving, red-headed wife of 53 years.
After graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg, MA, Frank served in the U.S. Navy at the tender age of 17. Because of the G.I. Bill, Frank attended Holy Cross College graduating in 1948 and in 1952 finished his law degree at Georgetown University. Frank was an attorney for over fifty years practicing law in MA, NY and CT. Until last year, he was a magistrate judge in Norwalk and Bridgeport.
Frank had a quick wit and loved entertaining his family and friends with his sweet Irish tenor voice. Frank was often seen sitting in his favorite chair reading the daily papers while watching sports; he especially supported the New England teams and women’s sports. He also loved playing golf at Longshore in Westport and was very proud of shooting two holes-in-one over his golfing career.
Frank is survived by his wife, Jay Charlton; their three children, Craig Charlton of Chicago, IL, Susan Wallace of Madison, CT and Kathy Lee of Fairfield, CT; his daughter Sally Barnes of Montana; six grandchildren, Nicole & Emily Charlton, Max, Sean & Hayden Lee, and Rose Wallace; and a sister, Joan Laverty of Norwood, MA.
