Dorothy, a retired elementary school teacher, was born February 10th, 1925 in Trenton, New Jersey to the late Alfred O. and Gertrude Stonaker. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Beaver College in 1946 (now Arcadia University) and M.S. in Remedial Reading from Bridgeport University.
Dorothy taught in the Stamford school system for nearly 40 years. When living in Stamford, she belonged to St. John’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry and was active in its Altar Guild and Women’s League. Dorothy was a loving and nurturing mother and a wonderful encouraging grandmother who touched everyone she met with her caring spirit, open heart and ready smile.
Dorothy and her beloved late husband of 50 years, Stanley A. Twardy, Sr., lived in Stamford until retiring to Virginia in 1998. She is survived by her brother, John Stonaker and wife Janice; her son Stanley A. Twardy, Jr. and wife Cindy of Wilton, CT; and daughter Nancy Twardy Ellis and husband Dan of Fairfax, Virginia; and grandchildren Jeffrey Ellis and wife Danielle, Michael Ellis and Courtney Twardy.
The funeral service and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or St. John’s Episcopal Church, 628 Main Street, Stamford, CT 06902
